State Begins Contract Talks with Workers’ Unions

Olympia, WA – The State of Washington sits down this week with its biggest employees' union to begin contract negotiations. The workers on the "General Government" bargaining team are staff members at colleges across the state, and they're coming to the table seeking more money, better health insurance at lower costs, and more time off to spend with families.

Union representatives surveyed their membership to see what they expect from the new contract, and it's no surprise that pay raises topped the list. Angie Simpson, who works at Tacoma Community College, is on the bargaining team. She says control of health care costs is also a goal.

"They are increasingly going up, and there's fear that it's going to go up even more. So we'd like to try to get that negotiated now."

Max Phipps, of Everett Community College, says the bargaining teams expect to run up against state budget constraints, but he notes that state workers are facing the same cost of living issues as everyone else. This will be his third time on a contract bargaining team.

"It's interesting work, very challenging work. It's very long hours; sometimes very frustrating. I'm sure management has the same perspective. But we all share similar goals, of getting the best contract for everybody."

The groups also will be negotiating for family-friendly policies, such as more time off and job sharing. Five teams are negotiating contracts for a total of 40,000 members of the Washington Federation of State Employees. The bargaining sessions are scheduled to run through August.
