Minnesota Truckers Tighten Belts, Call for a “Slow Down”

Roseville, MN – If you think you're hit hard by rising fuel prices, imagine the expenses of those who drive for a living. John Hausladen with the Minnesota Trucking Association says every increase comes out of profits, and "pump shock" is having a major impact on the trucking industry.

"Diesel fuel is our number one input cost, and it is the highest it has been in history. We have to pass these costs along. There is just no way we can absorb them. Consumers are going to pay more."

Hausladen says one sure way to save fuel is for everyone to slow down.

"We think its time to enact a national speed limit of 65 miles per hour for all vehicles. That's something Congress can do now, and it can do quickly. We can reduce speeds, we can reduce consumption of fuel, and we think that will have a huge impact."

He lists other potential energy-saving steps: a moratorium on filling the strategic petroleum reserve, rejecting calls to suspend the federal fuel tax, and increasing environmentally sensitive methods of oil exploration. He says Minnesota Trucking Association members will pass along those ideas when they meet with Senator Amy Klobuchar today; in the meantime, Hausladen insists truckers are doing all they can to cut fuel use.

"We're doing a lot of voluntary things, like reducing our speed, picking routes that are the most direct, choosing to serve customers that better align with where we're continually running, and using auxiliary power units to heat and cool the trucks so we're not using the big engine. Also, we're learning how to shift our trucks again – progressive shifting is a strategy – not getting those RPMs up too high."

However, with diesel at over $4.70 a gallon, $2 more than a year ago and up a half-dollar in just the last month, Hausladen says some truckers are getting out of the business, and others are working at a loss, hoping fuel prices ease.
