Bismarck, ND – Think about the population of the city of Bismarck -- that is, a number pushing 60,000 -- and then imagine every one of those people without medical insurance. That's equal to 11 percent of the population of North Dakota -- and THAT's the actual number of North Dakotans who don't have health insurance coverage today. How to address this situation and the critical issues around health care will be the subjects of a forum in Bismarck on June 5.

AARP North Dakota and the North Dakota Farmers Union are jointly sponsoring the forum to try to find solutions to this lack of coverage. AARP state director Janis Cheney says the effects of having so many families in North Dakota without health coverage are easy to see.

"There is the very real issue of rising health care costs, and many people are just one accident or illness away from bankruptcy."

One in four farm and ranch operators surveyed by the North Dakota Farmers Union in 2007 said that health care costs contributed to financial problems for their families. And nationally, according to Families USA, 200 people between the ages of 25 and 64 have died since the year 2000 because they lacked medical coverage.

Cheney says next week's forum isn't just for a select few.

"Business has a role in that discussion, government has a role in that discussion, individuals and each one of us have a role in that discussion."

The forum is part of Divided We Fail, a national bipartisan effort to address and find solutions to issues of affordable health care and long-term financial security.

The forum takes place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at the Doublewood Inn, Bismarck.
