Report Scopes Out Gun Violence Deaths of WYO Kids

Cheyenne, WY – The unlucky number for Wyoming is seven. That's how many children died from gunshots in one year, although it was down one death from the previous year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The statistics (from 2003 through 2005) are examined in a new report by the Children's Defense Fund (CDF); it shows gun deaths of children nationwide were up for the first time in more than ten years.

Ladd Everitt, with the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, believes part of the solution is a push for quality improvements in the firearms market: better product safety features and more safety education. Both, he adds, would be natural fits for a state like Wyoming, with its strong hunting tradition.

"There is a lot of room for improvement, in terms of the way we manufacture guns, in order to make them tamper-resistant to children."

Everitt says even if parents do all the right things – lock up weapons, and provide safety education – Wyoming kids can still get their hands on firearms, whether they plan to use them against themselves or someone else. He points to several mass shooting tragedies across the country that are linked to current gun sales policies.

"There is still this loophole in place that could allow an underage individual to buy a gun from a private seller. It could be at a gun show; it could be someone responding to a classified ad in a newspaper."

According to the CDF report, most gun-related deaths of children in Wyoming are suicides. In Everitt's opinion, this also indicates a need for more resources for the state's mental health systems for children and teens. Gun rights groups advocate gun safety education, but are concerned that new gun laws could infringe on the constitutional right to bear arms.
