Pittsburgh, PA – The Democratic Party platform is being finalized this weekend in Pittsburgh, and Pennsylvania health care reform advocates hope a guarantee for accessible health care for everyone makes the cut.

A nurse who lost her home because of medical bills will join Congressman John Conyers and Health Care for All Pennsylvania in calling for reforms Saturday. Donna Smith was featured in the 2007 Michael Moore documentary movie "SiCKO", and says those most hurt by the health care crisis are working, middle-class families.

"In reality, all of us are paying taxes and we're paying for everyone else's health care, but we're not getting what we need. We're better human beings than this. We're better people than this."

Pediatrician Dr. Scott Tyson, who practices in western Pennsylvania, says that during his 25 years as a doctor, he’s seen the health care system change dramatically, and not for the good of his patients or his business.

"Morally, there is absolutely no justification for what we are doing in the United States. We are the only nation in the industrialized world that does not have all of its people covered by health care."

A new poll from The Commonwealth Fund shows 82 percent of Americans think the health care system needs to be fundamentally changed or completely rebuilt.

Smith says they'll present the same ideas to the Republican National Convention.

Critics of such a national health care system say it would encourage employers to drop coverage.

Donna Smith, Congressman Conyers and Dr. Tyson will address a news conference Saturday, 10:00 a.m., at the David Lawrence Convention Center, room 307.

The survey is at www.commonwealthfund.org.
