“Tropic Thunder” Draws Lighting From Disability Advocates

Des Moines, IA - The movie "Tropic Thunder" opens today in movie theaters across Iowa, and there are calls for movie-goers to skip it because of what are seen as insulting comments and characterizations of people with intellectual disabilities, including liberal use of the word "retard." Becky Harker, director of the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council, is among many advocates who think the movie should be shunned.

"I recommend that people boycott it because I think their presence condones it. I think also I would be concerned about people who aren't familiar with disabilities seeing something like this and thinking that it is OK to talk like this, or act like this."

The movie studio has issued a statement saying the film's goal is to make fun of actors and Hollywood and there are no plans to re-edit it for release. Harker is concerned the studio and producers don't understand the implications.

"They are adding to the bully behavior, to the inappropriate jokes. I think they are saying that this is OK and it's not, it's absolutely not."

Harker explains her organization and others work hard to help the community be accepting of people with disabilities, and this film does nothing to support that.

"Tropic Thunder" is a Dreamworks production and is rated R. More information on the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council is available on the their web site, www.state.ia.us.
