VA's Unsung Heroes: Community Health Centers
Wednesday, August 13, 2008
Richmond, VA - Many Virginians live miles away from hospitals, so community health centers play a crucial role in providing basic health care needs. A week-long campaign is celebrating the role that CHCs play in keeping Virginia healthy.
Rick Shinn, Director of Public Affairs for the Virginia Community Healthcare Association, says "National Health Center Week" is a great way to draw attention to the 95 such providers across the state.
"Every one of these health centers is located in a community that needs additional access to care. And that's really why we're there, to meet basic health care needs."
Shinn explains that rising health care costs are driving more and more Virginians to rely on community health centers, and he believes it's critical to continue to invest in an accessible and affordable health care system.
Shinn says the doctors and nurses at the community health care centers focus on creating a medical "home."
"Our folks really take the time to get to know their patients instead of just moving them in and out of the offices as quickly as possible."
