Great Falls, MT – Montana farmers and ranchers plan to bend some Congressional ears in Washington, D.C., this week. More than a dozen are there today, as part of a National Farmers Union "Fly-In" event.

Chris Christiaens with the Montana Farmers Union says, the goal of the Fly-In is to emphasize the importance of issues that agricultural businesses are facing. Chief among their concerns, he adds, is that the new U.S. Farm Bill could be misinterpreted through "rules and policies."

"We want to make sure that everything is timely, and that the intent of Congress is going to be followed as they implement the 2008 Farm Bill."

Since many fertilizers are petroleum-based, Christiaens explains, their prices have skyrocketed right along with gasoline and diesel fuel. It's forcing some in Montana agriculture businesses to make tough choices.

"Many people are making the decision that they'll plant without fertilizer, and maybe change some of the crops that they're doing."

Healthcare for rural Montanans is another issue they plan to bring up with their Congressional delegation, and Christiaens says the local folks with whom he's discussed it, have some strong opinions.

"They would like to see healthcare for everyone, equal to those benefits of our Congressional people - and that's a pretty 'healthy' type of healthcare."

Trade agreements, climate change, farm fuel production and rising costs are also on the agenda - and Christiaens says he and 14 others will try to get it all in between now and September 10, when they're scheduled to return to Montana.
