Keene, NH – The stresses of college can take a toll on mental health - and suicide is a concern on campuses.

Keene State College is working to keep students mentally healthy. The college has an an intensive program to remove the stigma of mental health issues and address alcohol abuse – which is a suicide risk factor. Counseling center director Candice Wiggum says she used grant money to set up a suicide prevention system, which also utilizes volunteers to be “eyes and ears” on campus.

"We've trained over 700 students, faculty and staff to be 'gatekeepers' – to know how to recognize the signs of suicide, to talk to somebody about that and to get them help."

This is National Suicide Prevention Week. Wiggum says it's a good opportunity to talk about the unique challenges and that students face.

"It just is a reflection, I think, of the stress and anxiety that students feel these days. They don't see any other option."

Wiggum says students who may be at risk receive special counseling sessions and are connected with healthcare professionals. Keene State also has incident support teams in place that respond to violence on campus.
