IL Immigrant Voter Drive Registers Almost 26,000 Newbies

Chicago, IL - New records for voter registration have been set in Illinois, where a campaign that targets immigrants has signed up almost 26,000 new voters.

Lawrence Benito, associate director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, says the effort was a lot of work, going door-to-door, calling, and sending mail. He believes the success rate was high, in part, because of growing interest among immigrants over the past two years in just and humane immigration reform.

"In 2006, there were historic marches; in 2007, citizenship applications were reaching record levels; and this year, an unprecedented number of people are going out to the polls."

Benito says record numbers of voters have been registered among Chinese, Korean, South Asian, Latino, Polish and Arab communities, but he believes there is still more work to be done. His concern is the challenge of getting people to the polls and helping new voters understand election procedures.

"What we're finding is that people need a lot more information about the process, about early voting, and specifically about where they need to go to vote."

More information regarding absentee voting, registration deadlines in Illinois, voter requirements, and election day locations can be found at http://icirr.org/.
