Casper, WY - It's hunting season in Wyoming, and also the time of year when bears, including grizzlies, are trying to pack on some extra pounds before they hibernate in winter. One Wyoming hunter has already been mauled this year, and a safety campaign is underway to try to prevent other attacks.

This is the fifth year that the Sierra Club is sponsoring the safety effort. As Monica Fella with the Sierra Club's Grizzly Bear Project explains, hunters do everything they tell hikers, bikers and others not to do in the backcountry, in order to avoid meeting up with a bear.

"Hunters, just by the nature of their sport, are put at more risk. They're being quiet, they're hunting at dusk and dawn, their scent is covered up."

Fella lists some commonsense precautions for hunters, such as removing carcasses as quickly as possible, sleeping 100 yards from any cooking areas, and carrying bear pepper spray. Research has shown that bear pepper spray is 94 percent effective in stopping bears. Firearms are not very effective in stopping a bear attack, according to Fella, because the aim has to be precise or the shot will make the bear more aggressive.

Bear pepper spray does not require a precise aim. Fella also suggests that anyone hiking or biking in the woods should carry a canister, of at least 7.9 ounces in volume and with a minimum spray distance of 25 feet.
