Gun Violence and Kids Targeted in MT

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

Helena, MT - The fateful combination of young people and gun violence is part of today's "Day of International Concern" being marked across the country. Federal statistics show the number of gun deaths of children and teens in Montana has risen three years in a row.

The Children's Defense Fund has been tracking such trends for ten years, and spokesman Ed Shelleby says that, while updating gun safety laws would help, the problem also involves what he calls the nation's "culture of violence."

"We have this sort of romanticized notion of guns and violence portrayed in video games and movies, on television and through the Internet. A great place to start would be if parents said, 'You know what? We're not going to expose our children to this.'"

Shelleby says in Montana, most gun deaths are suicides, which points to the need for mental health services and education. He says it's important not to become desensitized to such violence, which is easy to do because it's so common in entertainment

"Talk to community leaders and tell them about the effects of gun violence, not only for children, but for themselves, and for their communities."

Those opposed to changing gun laws charge interference with the "right to bear arms" cited in the U.S. Constitution.
