"Knock, Knock" is No Joke in Virginia This Week

November 3, 2008

Fairfax, VA - It's the last big push to "Get Out the Vote" in Virginia, with thousands of canvassers knocking on doors across the state over the weekend, today and tomorrow. Matt Fitting is with the AFL-CIO "Working America" campaign in northern Virginia - one group that has been hitting the pavement to talk to voters for months now. He says the union has doubled its efforts since Saturday to try and knock on 250,000 doors before polls close tomorrow night, and he expects they'll get an earful.

"Folks around here have been canvassed a bunch, but even so, they're still willing and eager to talk about what issues are on their minds. People like to be asked what they're thinking and what's making them anxious."

Fitting says the people they have spoken with have been most anxious about the economy over the past few months, along with concerns about health care and social security.

Fitting adds many of these Virginians are asking the same questions about the candidates.

"Who's going to actually do something about the 47 million Americans who don't have insurance? By the way, 10 million of them are kids. Who's going to actually do something to protect our retirement savings so we make sure that we and our children have have something to fall back on when we retire?"

"Working America" is a national grassroots campaign to connect with working families who are not union members. The campaign's Web site is www.workingamerica.org.
