Changes in the Wind for U.S. Farm Policy

Thursday, November 6, 2008

Expect some major changes in farm policy. That prediction comes from Minnesota Farmers Union President Doug Peterson, in light of the election of Barack Obama. Peterson says the incoming president has promised to follow a trade policy that gives U.S. producers a level playing field in global markets.

"We're going to have fair trade, not these free trade unilateral agreements that reward multi-national grain companies and multi-national corporations over consumers and farmers."

He says Obama also wants strong labor and environmental protections in all trade agreements. And, he wants to cap farm payments at $250,000.

In addition, Peterson expects shoppers will notice some changes at the supermarket.

"We'll have implementation of country-of-origin labeling, which means we'll know where our food comes from. And there will be tighter inspections and improved health and food safety standards, which consumers have been calling for."

Peterson says the new president also has promised to secure the nation's food supply by encouraging young people to get into farming. And, he says, we can expect an emphasis on energy independence.

"We're going to have an energy policy that is going to build an infrastructure so that we can deliver the energy at a reasonable cost and not be held hostage by foreign countries. That has to be done if this country is going to continue to prosper."

Peterson says that policy includes developing an economy based on renewable sources such as wind, ethanol and biofuels. The latter also will help lower food prices by reducing food transportation costs, he adds.
