Cleveland, OH –"Green collar" jobs could be the wave of the future in Ohio. Governor Ted Strickland is among those backing the Apollo Alliance, a new national project that could add hundreds of thousands of clean energy jobs in the next decade. Strickland says that as a top energy user Ohio needs to find cleaner ways to produce it.

"We ought to produce energy in a way that will create good-paying jobs, be good for our environment, and enable us to become less dependent on foreign sources for our energy needs."

Strickland says the project could bring work to many of the state's unemployed.

"Ohio would be in a position to realistically see developed within our state some 400,000 new jobs related to clean and green energy production."

Policy Matters Ohio also supports the project, and executive director Amy Hanauer says clean energy may be the catalyst needed to kick-start the economy."

"It's a really exciting time for our economy, and it's a really exciting time for our environment, and the two can really come together in a way that really wins.”

Hanauer says the project has a great chance of succeeding, especially with the support of Ohio's governor and the next president.

"The Apollo Alliance has been talking about these issues for a long time, and now with president-elect Obama I see a tremendous potential for leadership from the federal level in having a renewable economy."

The project is asking for a half-trillion dollar investment from the federal government over 10 years for projects that rebuild infrastructure and promote renewable energy technologies.
