Sioux Falls, SD - The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are warning South Dakota residents who qualify for Medicare Part D prescription drug benefits to review their policy options, because many companies are increasing premiums and making other significant changes for 2009.

Sam Wilson with South Dakota AARP says that all Medicare beneficiaries are eligible for Medicare Part D, the prescription drug progam and that 46 percent of Medicare beneficiaries are eligible for low-income assistance.

"And so, we're really trying to identify those folks in South Dakota, that 46 percent of Medicare beneficiaries that should be applying for extra assistance. And that really takes a bite out of their prescription drug costs, because then they don't have to pay for premiums, or they pay a significantly-reduced premium, and then very small co-pays for any prescription drug, refill, or prescription that they need to fill for the first time."

Some premiums will be increasing by as much as 20 percent next year, Wilson says. His greatest concern is that eligible beneficiaries won’t take the time to review their prescription plans.

"Complacency is really our biggest enemy; we need to get people reviewing those plans. You have a month and half to do so before the first of the year. There are a lot of resources available in every county, people that you can talk to one-on-one. So, we're really encouraging people to do that. The education campaign on this is the most important part of what AARP, SHIINE (South Dakota Senior Health Information and Insurance Education Program), The Senior Medicare Fraud Patrol, county extension agent, all of these organizations, that's what we do."

The open enrollment period begins November 15th and runs through December 31st. Help is available by contacting the SHIINE program at 1-800-536-8197.
