Idahoans Invited to Step Into the Classroom for Education Week

November 19, 2008

Boise, ID – It's "American Education Week" in Idaho. This week is set aside each year to celebrate public education as a basic right and a responsibility, and Idahoans are being invited into classrooms to "see for themselves."

Idaho Education Association President Sherri Wood encourages people to check out both elementary and secondary schools.

"You can volunteer a few hours a week. It's an opportunity to actually get into the schools and see all the good things that are going on."

Wood says seeing students in their day-to-day activities provides a better understanding of a quality education, which she says is about more than test scores.

Public school funding will likely be competing for fewer state dollars next budget year, and Wood says it will be important to focus on the long term. She points to studies that have shown quality public schools bring economic benefits as a recruitment tool for businesses, and because the schools grow a quality workforce with higher earning potential.

"We believe that economic growth comes out of educating our children and supporting our public schools."

"American Education Week" was first designated by the National Education Association 87 years ago.
