Albuquerque, NM – En medio de tanta dificultad económica, muchas familias estarán dando gracias por cosas simples que ya dan por hecho, como tener un hogar calientito este invierno. Afortunadamente para las familias que más batallan para pagar la energía con la que calientan su casa, este año disponen de más ayuda.

El Congreso acaba de autorizar más fondos para el "Low-Income Heating Assistance Program" (LIHEAP; Programa de Apoyo en Calefacción, para gente de Bajos Ingresos), lo cual significa que las familias con menores ingresos podrían ser elegibles para un pago emergente único de 300 dólares, según explica Kira Jones, de Community Action New Mexico (Acción Comunitaria Nuevo México).

"Eso puede aplicarse a la cuenta de electricidad, gas natural, propano, leña y pedacería de madera, para la gente que tiene calentadores de pedacería en las zonas más rurales."

Las familias tienen también el derecho de negociar un plan de pagos con las empresas que les surten la energía, agregó Jones.

"Es un asunto de pagar diez dólares al mes o veinte dólares al mes durante doce meses, o incluso 18, y eso es lo que la gente necesita proponer."

Dice que si la gente se mete en problemas al negociar con su empresa proveedora de energía, puede presentar una queja ante la Public Regulation Comission (Comisión de Regulación Pública).

Para poder recibir este pago de emergencia, las familias deben cumplir con un requisito de ingreso familiar bajo y llenar una solicitud. Dice Jones que la gente cuya solicitud no sea aceptada en este programa, aún puede obtener ayuda en su iglesia local, en las mismas empresas surtidoras de energía y en organismos de caridad como el Salvation Army (Ejército de Salvación).

También encontrarán ayuda para climatizar las casas y mejorar la eficiencia en el uso de energía, agrega, en el programa estatal "Energy Smart" (Energía Inteligente).
