Una Iglesia de Nuevo México se pone “Silvestre”

Albuquerque, NM - Existe una Iglesia que, además de atender a los fieles de Albuquerque, también cuida de la vida silvestre que le rodea. Se trata de la First Unitarian Church (Primera Iglesia Unitaria), cuyos fieles participan en un programa ecológico, lo que les pone a la vanguardia de una tendencia nacional. El proyecto consiste en crear un hábitat para proteger y conservar la vida silvestre local.

Esta iglesia es la primera de Nuevo México en tener un hábitat silvestre certificado y reconocido a nivel nacional. De hecho podría decirse que en esta congregación de Albuquerque hay dos santuarios: uno en el templo, para la gente, y otro en terrenos de la iglesia, para la vida silvestre. Nancy Cushman es miembro de la congregación y una de las voluntarias que mantiene el hábitat. Ella explica que se aplicaron técnicas de jardinería sustentable para crear espacios que brindaran la comida, agua y protección necesarias, además de un lugar para que aniden las aves, junto con otros pequeños animales e insectos.

"Quisimos usar las plantas nativas y usar cosas con bajo contenido de agua, y hacer un lugar para los pájaros y los animales, pero también para los seres humanos."

La Dra. Kim Winter, de la National Wildlife Federation (Federación Nacional de la Vida Silvestre), dice que el programa del hábitat está volviéndose esencial, debido a que se están perdiendo miles de acres a cielo abierto, por la urbanización y el desarrollo.

"Así que conforme las áreas habitables se van estrechando más y más, se hace necesario poder reservar pequeños hábitats, pequeñas islas de refugio de vida silvestre, enclavadas en ese paisaje urbano."

De hecho puede decirse que existen decenas de miles de "hábitats silvestres certificados" en los Estados Unidos, ya que muchas comunidades y personas constantemente crean paraísos para la vida silvestre en sus barrios y en el patio trasero de sus casas.
