California - Dos leyes nuevas que entran en efecto el primero de Enero están diseñadas a dar inicio al programa estatal de "Química Verde" de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de California (California Environmental Protection Agency), y encontrar alternativas más seguras a químicos tóxicos presentes en productos de uso diario. Una requiere que el estado identifique químicos con potencial tóxico y evaluar alternativas más inocuas; mientras la segunda crea una base de datos pública en línea para proveer información de químicos de uso común.

Bill Magavern, Director del Sierra Club de California dice que es importante que las ideas detrás de la química verde sean traducidas a estándares fuertes y ejecutables que protejan a todos en California. También menciona que el siguiente paso es que el Departamento del Control de Substancias Tóxicas (State Department of Toxic Substances Control) establezca nuevos estándares.

"Lo cuál permitiría a los expertos científicos en altas posiciones ejecutivas decidir que químicos son seguros para ser utilizados en nuestros productos, cuales productos pueden continuar ser vendidos en California y cuales necesitarán protecciones adicionales."

De a cuerdo a un reporte de la Universidad de California, casi 4,500 trabajadores en el estado mueren cada año por ser expuestos a ciertos químicos. El Concilio de Química Americano (American Chemistry Council) mantiene que la industria química gasta más de once billones de dólares por año para reducir emisiones para proteger la salud de las personas y del medio ambiente. Magavern dice que después de años de limpiar contaminantes, California por fin se está enfocando en la raíz del problema.

"Al tener estándares más estrictos para cuáles químicos pueden ser usados y al tratar de dar incentivos para crear químicos y productos más seguros y verdes."
