Helena, MT – Montana schools are going back to school to learn how to get a handle on energy costs. The "Repowering Montana Schools" Energy Summit set up by the School Administrators of Montana is exploring ways schools can cut expenses. According to state figures, energy is the second-biggest expenditure in most school budgets.

Townsend School District Superintendent and School Administrators of Montana president Brian Patrick says schools should get energy audits done to identify possible savings. And, even before that, they can simply change some light bulbs.

"There have a lot of advances made in light technology. You're able to replace some light bulbs, and fluorescent tubes, and save substantial amounts of money."

His district retro-fitted lighting with energy-efficient bulbs several years ago and Patrick claims it saves about $6,000 a year.

Patrick points to another way to save money on lighting: Put in more windows and take advantage of what nature has to offer.

"Look at things like harvesting daylight. Students perform better when there's more natural light in classrooms. So, that's obviously a win-win for schools."

Other research presented at the summit shows schools could cut as much as 30 percent from energy expenditures with building and heating system upgrades. Those projects can be expensive, and school leaders are investigating how some of those projects could be paid for in part with the next federal economic stimulus package.
