Big Question for North Dakota Farmers: What to Plant

January 19, 2009

Minot, ND – With commodity prices down, input costs up, and some North Dakota farmers still holding on to last year's crops, some big decisions will have to be made soon about what to plant this spring. The North Dakota Farmers Union and the agriculture risk management firm Country Hedging will hold a marketing seminar January 28th at the State Fair Center in Minot, and according to Farmers Union development specialist Mark Watne, North Dakota farmers are dealing with leftover challenges from last year.

"The challenge of course is the higher input costs that really rose last year, when we had even higher commodity prices, and now you are sitting with these high inputs and you've got this very variable commodity price."

The seminar will deal with market trends and the likelihood that a new administration will change the dynamics of low commodity prices.

"This administration seems to be pretty committed to renewable energy, and that should help use up that excess supply and keep our commodity prices at a little better level than we've seen."

Watne says that for the 2009 crop, farmers will have more choices on what to plant, and the seminar will help determine which commodities have the best chance of providing the top return.

The event is scheduled at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 28 in the Norsk Room at the North Dakota State Fair Center in Minot.
