Missoula, MT – About fifty Montana college students are joining 10,000 others from around the nation in Washington D.C. this weekend to demand something "bold" when it comes to the nation’s energy policy. The students held bake sales and raffles to raise enough money to make the trip to the nation's capitol where they will attend Power Shift ’09. Some call it a protest - others a call for action - aimed at demanding immediate federal climate action.

Lisa Madry, campus field director with the National Wildlife Federation, has worked with students in Montana interested in getting involved in the effort to push climate action policy at the federal level. She says their interest has been growing.

"They voted in higher numbers than ever before in the last election. They’re coming to Washington D.C. to demand strong, urgent action to address the climate crisis."

The Montana students are driven by different motivations, says Madry, but all share the same goal: to grow the nation's focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency.

"Some of them have come to this through fighting coal plants. Some of them come to this through working on their campuses to get their campuses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

Students will attend workshops and rallies through Sunday, and delegations will meet with lawmakers Monday. The group's stated goals include pushing "the new administration and Congress to pass bold, comprehensive energy and climate legislation."
