Tennessee Young People to Demand New Climate and Energy Laws

February 27, 2009

Nashville, TN – 120 Tennessee college students will join an estimated 10,000 young demonstrators from around the country this weekend in Washington, D.C. to demand new federal climate and energy legislation. The students are participating in Power Shift ’09, a gathering that will include workshops, speakers, and musicians and a Lobby Day on Monday.

Organizer Reagan Richmond, a Knoxville U.T. student, says the message the group wants to communicate is about the environment and employment.

"We need strong legislation dealing with the issues of global warming. It’s about taking care of our economy and our people so we’re creating thousands of new jobs."

Richmond believes young people have a strong incentive to shape the future of energy policy for two reasons.

"It’s going to have an effect on us one way or another for the rest of our lives, but even beyond us, it’s for the next generation."

Specifically, Power Shift ’09 favors reducing carbon emissions and creating green jobs with an emphasis on transforming America into a world leader in energy use reform.
