Washington, D.C. - "Power Shift '09" is a national gathering of students and young adults focused on shifting the nation's priorities. Pennsylvania is very well represented. More than 600 students and young adults from the state arrived in Washington, D.C., on Friday for the youth summit, giving Pennsylvania the second-largest delegation, right behind New York.

More than 10,000 youths and 50 national groups are immersed in the three-day show of political muscle aimed at environmental change. The National Wildlife Federation is one of them, and NWF campus field director Lisa Madry says it makes sense that young people are stepping forward to tackle their generation's greatest challenge.

"They voted in higher numbers than ever before in the last election. Now they're coming to Washington, D.C., to demand strong, urgent action to address the climate crisis."

At the "Power Shift '09" rally today on the U.S. Capitol West Lawn, participants are demanding that the President and Congress pass a bold climate and energy policy that prioritizes renewable energy, green jobs and an aggressive cap on carbon emissions.

Madry says they may be young, but these activists have a lot of experience moving policymakers on the local level.

"Some of them have come to this through fighting coal-fired power plants. Some of them have come to this through working on their campuses to get their schools to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions."
