AARP Michigan: Health Care Reform is Essential for All

Lansing, MI - Governors Jennifer Granholm of Michigan and Jim Doyle of Wisconsin will lead a discussion on health care reform today in Dearborn at the Midwest Regional White House Forum on Health Care Reform. Conference attendees will explore ways to cut insurance costs while improving access to coverage.

The fastest-growing segment of uninsured is those 50 to 64 years old: more than 7 million people nationwide. Michigan AARP state president Eric Schneidewind says those who can afford to pay for coverage spend more than 10 percent of their income on health care.

"As a nation, we spend a higher percentage of our wealth on health care than any other country in the world, almost 30 percent more, and yet we're not as healthy as many countries. Something's wrong."

Among the reforms suggested by AARP: keeping Medicare affordable by rewarding doctors and hospitals for quality rather than the quantity of care; promoting prevention and healthy behaviors; and eliminating fraud, waste and abuse. However, critics say there's no guarantee that health care reform will result in lower cost and availability.

Schneidewind adds that the high cost of health care coverage is a major factor in the loss of American jobs.

"For instance, for an automobile there's more spent on health care than for the steel to make the car. We just can't do that and remain competitive in the world."
