Albuquerque – A los ojos de los legisladores y los expertos, Nuevo México podría ser el nuevo “Estado del Sol”. Lo anterior, porque los legisladores ya se preparan para atender dentro de poco la reforma energética y la lucha contra el calentamiento global.

Hay quienes afirman que el estado ya tiene un liderazgo claro en estas materias, y que la mejor manera de ejercerlo es con el ejemplo. No dudan de la importancia del papel que está desempeñando Nuevo México en la construcción de un sistema energético más limpio y verde, más ecológico.

Joe Mendelson, director de políticas de calentamiento global en la National Wildlife Federation (Federación Nacional de la Vida Silvestre), dice que un modelo para el futuro lo constituyen planes como el de una granja solar cerca de Deming, que podría proveer de energía a decenas de miles de hogares.

“Ese es el tipo de producción de energía limpia que podemos ver en el futuro. Descansará sobre una base estable de energía confiable, nuestro sol, en vez de petróleo importado.”

Mendelson dice que conservar fuentes domésticas más sustentables de energía es esencial para proteger a la nación de futuras carencias.

“La realidad es que seguiremos viendo este tipo de subidas súbitas en los precios hasta que logremos la transición a un futuro de energía doméstica más sustentable y confiable – tecnologías de energía limpia, del viento, solar y otras.”

Quienes critican el plan argumentan que los legisladores deberían enfocarse primero en enderezar la economía, pero el Presidente Obama responde que ocuparse de la energía es clave para revivir la economía. Mendelson se solidariza con el anhelo de Nuevo México, de que el 20 por ciento de nuestra electricidad venga de fuentes renovables para el año 2020. Agrega que eso ayudaría a que aumenten los empleos y a la vez combatiría el cambio climático.
