Free Tax Prep and Free Money for Californians

Free tax assistance and free money – two things many Californians could probably use this year. In the final weeks of tax season, working families are reminded of tax credits available to them, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which thousands of Californians fail to claim each year.

Congressman Xavier Becerra says that in these hard times, another way for Californians to keep their hard-earned money is to take advantage of such free services as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) centers set up throughout the state.

"These VITA sites will offer people a chance to know what they can claim, in terms of any tax deductions and tax credits; it will help them with the filing of their tax returns with the IRS; and they'll do it without charging you a penny."

Taxpayers are also warned of the risks of Refund Anticipation Loans – you may get your tax cash sooner, but the loan terms will likely cost more in the long run.

A new report from the Children's Defense Fund found that even those Californians who took advantage of the EITC still lost money because they used commercial tax preparers or took out high-interest Refund Anticipation Loans. CDF outreach coordinator Saudeka Shabazz says it doesn't make sense to get a short-term loan for a refund.

"Their refund may be a little bit faster, but it can carry interest rates on average from about 50 percent all the way up to 500 percent. Basically, it's a loan on the taxpayers' own money; they're borrowing their own money."

Free VITA centers can be found by simply calling 211.
