Report: A Million Minnesotans Under-Insured

Washington, D.C.; St. Paul, MN – New research counts a high number of Minnesotans who are not covered by health insurance. The report from Families USA finds, at some point during the past two years, over one million Minnesotans didn’t have covereage, and two-thirds of them were uncovered for six months or more, according to the group's analyst, Kim Bailey.

"One-point-one million Minnesotans were uninsured at some point during 2007-2008. And that’s just under one-quarter of Minnesota’s non-elderly population, though that's better than the national average of one-third uninsured."

Marc Kimball, with the Children’s Defense Fund of Minnesota, says that’s disturbing, because health coverage is a key indicator of a child’s well-being.

"If they do have health coverage, they do better in school; they have fewer long-term health problems and that saves money in our health care system. They’re more productive in the future work force and that comes back as an investment to our state."

Coverage is critical to the economic stability and well-being of families, says Kimball, and the report is more evidence our healthcare system needs a real shake-up. Kimball notes legislation pending at the State Capitol would guarantee coverage for all Minnesotans, beginning with children.

The report found the percentage of children with a coverage gap is just above the adult rate and concludes the high numbers show the seriousness of the problem and what happens when it’s ignored, and notes there are encouraging signs policymakers are getting serious about fixing it.

The report is at www.familiesusa.org.
