Harrisburg, PA - Kids in Pennsylvania schools would learn more about the world outside their classrooms under a bill just introduced in Washington, D.C. The "No Child Left Inside Act" calls for federal funding to expand environmental education and prepare students for the future green workforce.

Don Baugh, who is vice president for education at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and director of the No Child Left Inside Coalition, says too many Americans don't know the answers to such simple questions as, "Where does your drinking water come from, or the fuel for your home or car?" He says the idea behind the legislation is to give children that knowledge and more.

"We're hoping that there'll be a basic understanding of environmental literacy so that kids will correct this problem."

Baugh says video games and heavy schedules are separating many kids from the environment.

"We want to re-connect kids to the outdoors and to nature so that they have a stronger bond to the great resources in, say, Pennsylvania."

Baugh says the No Child Left Inside Act would require states to develop an environmental teaching plan before they qualify for funding. He says Pennsylvania is in a good place with the basics already.

"If they dust off the plan they have, invigorate it a little bit, make sure it involves all kids, and then get it ready for implementation, they'll be in good shape."

Fiscal conservative groups are urging Washington to pull in the reins on spending and the No Child Left Inside Act does come at a price of 100 million dollars a year for five years, for schools across the country. Baugh says states can add to the investment by retraining teachers to put the environment up there with the "Three R's" as essentials to a child's education.
