St. Paul, MN – The threat of major flooding along the Red River has receded, but residents are still rolling up their sleeves to get their communities back to normal. Lutheran Social Service has issued a statewide call for volunteers to come to Fargo-Moorhead Saturday and help remove the rest of the million-plus sandbags used to protect the community.

Organizer Cindy Johnson says citizens there have been through a lot.

"People are tired. They prepared for this, and then they prepared for a second crest as well. So, they had a month of this anxiety and of this hard work. We’re just hoping to help them out and get their lives back to normal as quickly as possible."

People living in the flooded ares feel a sense of relief the worst didn’t happen, admits Johnson, but it’s still not "business as usual" for those living along the Red River.

"They’re very anxious now to have this behind them and to put their lives back to normal. It’s much more difficult to get volunteers to remove sandbags than it is to have them fill them, because there’s much more urgency involved."

This is the second call for volunteers. Last Saturday, over 250 people helped out, while organizers expect a couple months to pass before all signs of the "flood-fight" are gone. Information about volunteering is online at www.lssmn.org. The call is for help between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
