Boston, MA – Mothers offer real life advice on how to be a better patient and improve the quality of health care for themselves, their children and their parents in a series of videos from the Partnership for Healthcare Excellence. Using real-life stories, the Massachusetts moms offer advice on improving family health care.

Marilyn Schlein Kramer, the organization's executive director, says the idea for the videos was born from consumer’s questions.

"In these videos, consumers - in this case mothers - describe and give practical tips on what it means to get involved in a physician visit and get better quality care."

Maria Grungo is one of the moms featured in the videos and she shares some of the lessons she learned when her son contracted a serious staph infection after a minor injury.

"It’s important to be your own advocate; to stay informed. Don’t take anything for granted. What appeared to be a very superficial injury may have cost him his life. So, it’s a good thing he was very diligent."

Also featured in a video is Dana Safran, who describes what she learned when her mother went into a coma and was unable to communicate with doctors. Her precaution of keeping a list on her person consisting of medications she was taking proved helpful in an emergency situation. That lesson, says Safran, helped her understand the importance of teaching her children to be engaged patients.

"We’ll think about questions ahead of time, or encourage them to think about questions that they have ahead of time, and we’ll be sure that the doctor provides time to answer the question."

Some of the video topics include: how to make the most of your time with your doctor, the importance of keeping medication lists, how to prevent infection, and how to take an active role in your health care. The videos are available free for public viewing at www.PartnershipforHealthcare.org.
