CA Teachers Union Sues Governor For $12 Billion

With education funding once again on the budget chopping block, a California teachers' union isn’t waiting for the outcome of Tuesday’s special election. The (CFT) has filed a lawsuit against Governor Schwarzenegger and other state officials to try to get back education funds they say are owed to schools, and also to clarify future funding.

While Proposition 1B would provide schools with most of the money the union is seeking, CFT president Marty Hittelman says the courts are a better option.

"We felt that we had to file now so that the money would be guaranteed to us when, in fact, the money comes back. Also, of course, Proposition 1B on the ballot would address the same issue, but only for this year and last year, not for the coming year."

Governor Schwarzenegger introduced new budget proposals last week to deal with the state’s growing deficit, with education once again targeted for cuts. Cathy Chapman, president of the Berkeley Federation of Teachers, says schools are already in a desperate situation.

"We are down to the bare bones and now we are going into those bones, literally. It’s a very bad situation for the children and families of our state."

Another measure on Tuesday’s ballot is Proposition 1A, a spending limit and temporary tax hike that, in conjunction with Prop 1B, would authorize more than $9 billion for schools. CFT opposes Prop 1A because it believes the measure would limit long-term funding for schools and other social services. Supporters of the measure say it will create a reserve fund to prevent even deeper cuts in the future.
