El Gobernador cortará la asistencia social y el programa de seguro médico para niños

Sacramento, CA – Grandes cortes a los servicios humanos y de salud se proponen para California, y hay más por venir. En cara de un déficit de 24-billones de dólares, el Gobernador Schwarzenegger propone nuevos cortes al presupuesto que eliminarían CalWORKS, el programa de asistencia social del estado que cual provee subsidio a familias de bajos ingresos. El gobernador también propone la eliminación del programa Familias Saludables (Healthy Families), el cual provee seguro médico para un millón de niños de bajos ingresos.

Anthony Wright, director de la organización Health Access California (Acceso a la Salud de California), dice que los cortes serían la reducción más grande en cobertura en la historia del estado.

"California sería el único estado en la nación que no cubre a los niños de bajos ingresos elegibles para el programa de Familias Saludables. Afectaría a todo el sistema de cuidado de salud y a nuestra economía."

Wright menciona que eliminar los programas significa que el estado perderá millones de dólares en fondos federales.

"Es por eso que algunos de estos cortes son irracionales y descuidados y otras alternativas incluyendo ingresos necesitan ser consideradas."

Wright añade que los cortes podrían ser evitados si el gobernador tomará un enfoque más balanceado que incluyera un incremento en ingresos. El gobernador ha dicho que no considerará incremento en impuestos. También ha mencionado que sabe que los cortes perjudicarán a familias, pero que no tiene otra opción. Planea discutir los cortes con oficiales del gobierno federal para evitar perder fondos complementarios. Su administración anunciará cortes adicionales de tres billones el viernes.
