Des Moines, IA – Iowans are being asked to leave something important behind when they head into to work today - the car. It's the American Public Transit Association's "Dump the Pump" day today to encourage people to give buses a try.

Brad Miller, general manager of the Des Moines Area Transit Authority (DART), says public transit around the state has seen a jump in use over the last year, coinciding with the jump in gas prices. But, when gas prices eased up, the number of riders stayed about the same. He compares the cost of filling the gas tank to bus fare.

"Twelve gallons a week and two dollars and fifty cents - you're close to 30 dollars. That’s the price of a monthly bus pass."

Taking the bus can bring other benefits, says Miller; it reduces individual carbon emissions by an average 20 pounds a day, and alleviates congestion on highways, saving taxpayers the additional cost of maintaining and building new roads. DART received over $7 million from the federal stimulus package to replace old buses and add new ones to the fleet to meet rising demand, adds Miller.

"We have standing-room-only - overcrowding problems on many of our express routes. But, we don’t have any more buses sitting around that we can bring out, so we need to buy more vehicles."

DART hopes today's publicity encourages people who have never used Iowa’s public transit systems to give them a try. For more information on "Dump the Pump" day, visit www.apta.com/services/dump_the_pump-09/index.cfm.
