PORTLAND, Maine - As the national debate over health care reform continues, federal stimulus funds already are on the ground and aiding community health centers in Maine and around the country. With more Mainers now in the ranks of the unemployed and uninsured, the funds could not have come at a better time, says Dave Taylor, chief operating officer with the National Association of Community Health Centers.

"This investment allowed health centers to respond quickly to increased demand as the recession deepened and people lost jobs, and consequently, their insurance coverage. It meant that the country was providing a real health safety net in troubled times. "

Eighteen of Maine's community health centers have received stimulus funds so far. More than 60 health centers throughout the state provide primary, mental and dental health care services on a sliding fee scale to thousands of Maine's uninsured and underinsured residents.

Carol Schreck is the executive director for the newly-formed Portland Community Health Center. Thanks to a federal grant of $1.3 million that the center received in March, she hopes to have the doors open to community residents this fall.

"We will be providing primary care. We want to make this a medical home for people. The model is a truly integrated model, so we will also have behavioral health on site."

As part of National Health Center Week this week, the National Association of Community Health Centers has released an online tool that tracks how and where stimulus funds have been used. It may be found at www.nachc.com.
