Stimulus Dollars Helping Treat WYO Health Care Woes

Cheyenne, WY - Even as health care reform is one of the hottest debates right now, Wyoming is already seeing improvements in quality and affordability, thanks to money from the federal economic stimulus package. More than $2.5 million has been used to expand care, improve care facilities and create jobs in Wyoming, according to new information from the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC).

Laci Garst, deputy executive director of the Wyoming Primary Care Association, says the money has been put to good use. More than 3,000 patients have been treated since the funding started coming through.

"With the stimulus dollars, our health centers have been able to provide cost-effective medical care, and desperately needed outreach services to Wyoming's high percentage of uninsured patients."

Dave Taylor, NACHC's chief operating officer, says $2 billion is being sent to centers nationwide, and for many, the infusion of cash has been timely.

"This investment allowed health centers to respond quickly to increased demand as the recession deepened and people lost jobs, and consequently, their insurance coverage."

Taylor believes the community health center model could serve as the example for efforts to reform health care and make services accessible for everyone. Currently, thousands in Wyoming do not have access to the health care system, he adds.

"They're shut out of preventive and primary care because they can't afford it, don't have insurance, or live where providers are scarce or non-existent."

Wyoming has six community health centers, and there are plans for more because, advocates say, they will play a role in health care reform. The centers accept patients regardless of insurance status or ability to pay and provide comprehensive care, including physical, dental and mental health services. The nation's community health care centers are being saluted this week for National Health Center Week. NACHC has created an online tool for tracking stimulus funding of community health centers at www.nachc.com.
