WV Health Reform Pro-Con Rallies This Weekend And Next Week

Charleston, WV - The national health care debate continues for the next week, with events around West Virginia Saturday and Tuesday. Although media coverage of townhall events has focused on health care reform, as well as opponents from the Tea Party and similar groups, Larry Matheney, secretary treasurer for the West Virginia AFL-CIO, says people favoring reform also will be rallying, saying better health care is vital for the state.

"We'll be able to get a message out this weekend that says there's another side to this argument; to respond to the teabagers in a way that's respectful, but one that's forceful."

The Tea Party Web site says they will be targeting Congressman Allen Mollohan's office in Clarksburg and Congressman Nick Rahall's office in Huntington Saturday. Matheney says they'll also be there, as well as at Congresswoman Shelly Capito's office in Martinsburg, and at events in Kanawha City and in Fayette County next Tuesday.

A quarter million West Virginians are uninsured, says Metheney, and a third of those with insurance still put off needed care because they are underinsured. He says a full quarter of West Virginians have trouble getting the medicines they need.

"We've got 26 percent of our West Virginia population making decisions about purchasing drugs, based on the fact that they literally can't afford them."

The Tea Party has described the proposed health care reform as a socialist-style takeover by the government. Matheney counters that is misinformation in defense of insurance companies.

More information about the events are available at the Teaparty Web site: www.teapartypatriots.org/State/West_Virginia, as well as the blog West Virginia Blue at www.wvablue.com/diary/4881/rallies-for-health-insurance-reform.
