BILLINGS, Mont. - Math has become a favorite subject for many eighth graders at Chief Joseph Middle School, Bozeman. The teacher responsible is being honored today as the state's 2010 "Teacher of the Year."

Anne Keith teaches math, algebra and communication arts. She wants everyone to know that Montana is fortunate to have many fabulous teachers, and she has a special message for those thinking about the profession.

"I want college students to know that it's a great profession, and we need the highly-qualified teachers to enter the workforce."

While she studies and keeps up-to-date on teaching methods and ways to inspire students, one of the issues that affects her teaching the most is what children bring to class. Family and personal problems - such as homelessness and health issues - can interfere with student learning and focus. She would like to see better coordination of services for these students so they have a chance to learn.

"Their home life, their support system in the community - we all need to come together to help these kids learn. Schools can't do it all, even though we try to."

Keith's first career was in the high-paying corporate world, but she found it unfulfilling and went back to school to get her teaching certificate. She is being celebrated today at the MEA-MFT Educators Conference in Billings, which runs through tomorrow. About 3,000 teachers are attending the conference to chalk up extra education and gain expertise in teaching math, science, English, computers, art and foreign languages.

More information about the MEA-MFT Educators Conference is available at www.mea-mft.org.
