New Mexico Making Big Moves Before Climate Action Day

SANTA FE, NM - Environmentalists, community activists and businesses have declared Saturday a Day of Climate Action worldwide, and a number of events are planned in New Mexico. They follow recent action the state's largest electric utility, PNM, to demonstrate its position on climate change with a bold move. Last month, the company announced it would not renew its membership in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce "due to the chamber’s opposition to meaningful federal climate change legislation."

PNM spokesperson Don Brown is unapologetic over the split.

"We've had a productive relationship on other issues, but climate change for us was so important that we decided to focus our efforts with those allies who support similar legislation in Congress."

Conservation groups like the Sierra Club say the move sends the right message on climate change, but the group worries PNM will not meet the required state renewable energy standard. The Club would like to see more support for initiatives such as rooftop solar. PNM states it is working to roll out more renewable sources, and says it has no plans to build new traditional coal-fired power plants.

Shrayas Jatkar, conservation organizer for the Sierra Club, says they're hoping more than 300 people read statements.

"We hope they make the point that we need to get serious and get started right away in reducing our emissions and solving climate change."

Climate Day of Action events in New Mexico include a 3.5-mile walk in Albuquerque, a festival at Albuquerque Academy and events featuring citizens speaking out on the need to confront climate change, and a march to the Roundhouse in Santa Fe from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. More information is available at www.350.org.
