President Unleashes Clean Energy Stimulus: $138 Million NV Bound

LAS VEGAS - Nevada is one of the winners, as President Obama announced 100 "smart-grid" projects across the country on Tuesday. They will share $3.4 billion dollars in federal stimulus money, in the form of grants to companies and communities working together to modernize the nation's electrical distribution grid.

Dan Geary, Nevada field officer for Pew Environment Group, says building a more efficient energy delivery system will save consumers money and create hundreds of Silver State jobs.

"Senator Reid, working with the White House, has announced a $138 million grant to build Nevada's smart grid; this will be matched by a $160 million grant from NV Energy."

Geary says the grant will allow installation of nearly 1.5 million new "smart meters" in Nevada. They contain software that should give consumers information to help them better manage their energy use. The White House plans to start distributing the funds in the next 60 days.

In the past two years, Nevada has attracted nearly $20 million in venture capital tied to renewable energy projects. That means a lot is riding on the Clean Energy bill now pending in the U.S. Senate, says Geary.

"Keeping our eye on the ultimate goals -- America being a part of the global warming solution, enhancing our own national security, and creating a clean energy economy -- you know, there is a tremendous economic benefit for us to do this."

Also on Tuesday, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee opened three days of debate on the climate change bill. Opponents argue the bill will cost consumers in terms of new taxes and at the gas pump, while supporters say rapid action is needed to put the nation at the forefront for developing clean energy technologies.
