MN Receives Dollars to Go “Smart” With Energy

DULUTH, Minn. - Minnesota will receive an electrical jolt, financially: President Obama has okayed 100 "smart grid" projects across the country, including one in Duluth, that will share in 3.4 billion dollars in federal stimulus money. The grants are being made to companies and communities that are working together to modernize the electrical distribution grid. Allete, a power company based in Duluth, received the 1.5 million dollar grant.

Chris Cox, Minnesota field officer for the Pew Environment Group, says that by upgrading to a smarter grid, Minnesota will be able to save energy costs for families and put people to work. He says the time is now to move to more efficient and reliable energy systems.

"We can't expect to install brand-new technology that's clean and has a long future, based on existing technology that was implemented in the early 1900s."

Cox says the momentum is just beginning and a lot is riding on the Clean Energy bill now pending in the Senate. He says the country needs to invest even more dollars in its energy future.

"This is us remaking ourselves as a nation, this is us developing an economy that we don't yet have, so it's really important for people to realize that these are great investments."

Allete will use its funds to expand its smart meter network in Minnesota by 8,000, according to a U.S. Department of Energy statement. Those meters contain software that will give consumers better information to help them manage their energy use. The White House plans to start distributing the funds in the next 60 days.

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee debated last week on the bill. Opponents argue it will cost consumers in new taxes and at the gas pump, while supporters say rapid action is needed to put the nation out front in developing clean energy technologies.
