Survey: Second District Backs Teague on Climate Bill

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - A new survey finds support for the three New Mexico Congressmen who voted for the U.S. House version of the climate and energy bill earlier this year. The poll included registered voters from southern New Mexico.

Gregory Green is a New Mexico representative for the Pew Environment Group, which commissioned the survey. He explains why Pew chose to survey voters from New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District, which is represented by Harry Teague.

"There was a lot made out of the vote that Congressman Teague made, saying he was out of step somehow with his district. This poll shows that's just not true."

The survey reports that 68 percent of 2nd District voters surveyed said the United States should take action to reduce carbon emissions; six out of 10 said they would vote for a candidate who supported a bill creating clean energy jobs and addressing global warming.

Some have said such legislation could slow the economic recovery and mean higher utility bills. However, the House passed its version of the bill over the summer, and the Senate is expected to take up the issue soon.

The Pew survey shows that New Mexicans are concerned about global warming, Green says.

"More than that, we're an energy-producing state. We see the advantage of being the solution, with types of energy that we could export from New Mexico."

The state has potential for all sorts of renewable energy production, he adds - things like wind and solar energy, or even biodiesel grown from algae.

A summary of the poll is at www.pewglobalwarming.org.
