DENVER - Although the price of natural gas and home heating oil is down this winter, the rough economy still has meant an increase in the number of households needing help to pay energy bills, energy assistance offices in Colorado report. Skip Arnold, executive director of Energy Outreach Colorado, says it's a situation he has never seen before.

"It's putting all of those households at risk of losing their homes and not being able to afford medicine or food or medical care."

Arnold says while funding for his group and other organizations that help people with energy bills is down due to economic conditions, plenty of help is available.

"What people need to do is call 1-866-HEAT-HELP. At that toll-free phone number, they can find out about one of our partner agencies located close to them and how to get in touch with it."

He also offers a few tips for low- or no-cost measures that can help cut energy costs, such as installing low-flow shower heads or inserts and opening all south-facing curtains on sunny days - and remembering to close them when the sun goes down.

Arnold also says it's important to apply to the state for assistance right away. In Colorado, it's called the LEAP program.

"There'll be a good level of funding in the state LEAP program this year. The sooner people can apply, the sooner they're gonna realize that benefit."

Help may be available through his organization for people who do not qualify for LEAP, or who still might need a little extra assistance. Information is available at www.energyoutreach.org.
