LOS ANGELES - Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner and Jane Kaczmarek were just a few of the celebrities on the red carpet in Hollywood on Thursday night, but the real stars were the kids. Five Los Angeles-area high school students were honored at the Beverly Hills Hotel in the 19th annual "Beat the Odds" ceremony.

According to Edward Augustus, executive director of the Children's Defense Fund (CDF), the students have overcome tremendous adversity in their personal lives and proven that they can be positive forces in their communities.

"These five have figured out a way, through their own tenacity and determination, to be able to overcome those odds. Unfortunately, so many millions of children in this country don't have those opportunities."

CDF started the program in 1990 to celebrate the positive potential of young people. Augustus recalls the successes of past scholarship recipients.

"They've gone to professional careers; some have gone on to be teachers, some have gone on to be social activists themselves, and have really become role models themselves, to these young people."

Award recipients receive a college scholarship, laptop computer and support services to ensure their educational success after high school.

Since CDF's inaugural Beat the Odds event in Los Angeles, the group has awarded more than 350 scholarships to students across the United States. More information about the program is online at www.cdfca.org.
