SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Un Grupo de Trabajo del Gobernador presentará sus recomendaciones a la Comisión Estatal de Caza y Pesca sobre un sistema de reservas entre Santa Bárbara y la frontera con México.

Boun Prasert lleva muchos años pescando de los muelles de California. Como voluntario de La Bahía Heal (Heal the Bay), ayudó al hacer una encuesta a 3,000 pescadores y descubrió que la mayoría apoyan los parques submarinos. Añade que los encuestados creen que se beneficiarán al pescar mayores cantidades y peces más grandes cuando funcionen las áreas protegidas.

"El 85 por ciento de ellos dijeron que ahora pescan mucho menos que antes y también el 85 por ciento comentaron que están pescando peces más pequeños comparados a los de antes."

Añade Boun que es importante que sus compañeros pescadores de muelle consideren la visión global y como a la larga estas reservas marinas les beneficiará.

"En lugar de ver como les afecta a ellos personalmente, si no como nos afecta a todos como personas."

El plan incluye protecciones para áreas como el sur de La Jolla, Point Dume y Naples Reef, dejando casi un 90 por ciento de la costa abierta a la pesca, incluyendo pesca desde los muelles. Algunos críticos dicen que estas áreas protegidas prohíben la pesca en muchas áreas del mar. Se espera que la Comisión de a conocer su decisión final a principios de año.
