Don’t Get "Grinched": Holiday Charity Scammers are Out There

DES MOINES, Iowa - 'Tis the season to be giving - not only to loved ones, but also to those less fortunate. Charitable donations are needed more than ever this holiday season, but before opening your pocketbook to help those in need it's important to know where your hard-earned money will be going.

Chris Coleman, who heads the Better Business Bureau of Iowa, warns there are "Grinches" out there who may falsely try to represent well-known charities.

"They change the wording slightly, and make you believe that you're really giving to an organization that you're not."

If you want to make a tax-deductible donation, make sure the organization is classified as a charity under the Internal Revenue Service Code 501-C-3. Coleman says you should also ask how a charity intends to use your donation, and be wary of anyone who expects you to donate on the spot, without giving you time to do that little bit of extra research.

He says it's important to investigate to find out if a charity is legitimate, and says to be especially cautious of pitches made by e-mail, over the phone or door-to-door.

"We're a people that are good-hearted and want to help others, and so we look for chances to help other people, but there are scam artists out there that are willing to take advantage of that good spirit."

Coleman adds that you shouldn't let the scam artists discourage you from giving. Charities need donations more than ever, and most rely heavily on the goodwill of individuals during the holiday season to fund their operations.
