Oregon Teachers Hold Weekend Walkabout

HILLSBORO, Ore. - Parent-teacher conferences of a different kind will take place this weekend in Oregon - on the front porches of homes across the state. Members of the Oregon Education Association (OEA), a union representing about 47,000 Oregon educators, are canvassing in 15 cities on Saturday to talk with people about the effects on their schools if ballot measures 66 and 67 fail. Measure 66 would increase income taxes for families that earn over $250,000 a year, while measure 67 would raise the minimum corporate tax for Oregon businesses from $10 to $150.

One of the canvassers is Kathy Newman, president of the Hillsboro Education Association, an affiliate organization of OEA. She says it's important for voters to put a face on the issue.

"We're not out there to have any debates on the front doorstep. We welcome the opportunity to hear other views. But, at the same time, we're just there to say, 'We're a part of the community; we have children in the public schools. We depend on these services, and so do our families, and how can we help?'"

The Oregon Republican Party argues the tax proposals would raise money to pay for bigger government and what party chairman Bob Tiernan calls "outrageously generous benefits" for public employees, including teachers. But, Newman says it's been difficult to keep younger teachers in the profession because they can get better wages and benefits elsewhere.

"The benefits packages are not exorbitant; they're not excessive. They're right in line with any other profession. The fact that it takes, in our case, up to 17 years to get to the top of the salary scale - to make professional wages - should speak volumes."

Teachers in most Oregon districts have experienced cutbacks in staff, pay and supplies, as well as larger class sizes. The teachers union believes the ballot measures will help the state stabilize its income and make the tax system more fair for working families.
