CHICAGO - After a week of activities that included a bus tour to the offices of several Illinois legislators, the Illinois Coalition for Immigration and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) will cap the week off with a commemorative ceremony in memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. The group has spent the week raising awareness about the need for immigration reform.

Joshua Hoyt, executive director of the group, says the rally is meant to bring together two communities that are typically pitted against one another, but would both benefit from much-needed immigration reform.

"It's a joining together of the African-American and civil rights worker and immigrant rights groups saying that to get full equality in this nation we need to rebuild jobs, and we need a path to citizenship for the undocumented people who are working and contributing with their sweat and paying their taxes."

Although much of Congress's attention has been paid to health care reform, Hoyt believes there is a commitment by Democrats to pass some kind of immigration reform and he is ready to see that process begin.

"We're eager to begin this debate about how to fix the broken immigration laws in the system and how to rebuild our nation's economy. President Obama has said that this is an issue that needs to be addressed for national security and for economic renewal."

Reps. Luis Gutierrez, Jan Schakowsky and Danny Davis are expected to attend the event along with the Rev. Jesse Jackson. More than 1,000 members of the African-American, Latino, labor and faith communities also are expected at the event. The rally will take place Saturday on Chicago's west side at the First Baptist Congregational Church - where both Dr. King and the Rev. Frederick Douglas preached.
