Study: Children's Headaches Linked to Humidity and Rain

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - If your child complains of a headache and wants to stay home from school, it might not be all in her head. A new study in the journal Headache found humidity and rain were linked to children's headaches. In that research, a group of 25 children and teenagers with migraines or chronic tension-type headaches used electronic journals to track their headaches for two weeks, and researchers compared that information with weather data.

The author of the study, Dr. Mark Connelly, who is with Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, says symptoms tended to flare up on days when it rained or when humidity was higher than normal.

Dr. Connelly says a headache in a child is different than that suffered by an adult.

"Their brains are kind of in a place where they can't tolerate as much as stress on them, let's say, as other people. And so, as weather changes, that's thought to be a stressor on particular locations in the brain that then leads to a headache episode."

Dr. Connelly says the study did not look at barometric pressure, but he wouldn't rule that out as a trigger. He says more research into weather variables is needed.

The doctor says that, beyond over-the-counter pain relievers, there are no FDA-approved medicines for the treatment of pediatric headaches. But, he adds, certain changes in diet can help ease the pain.

"For some kids and adults, caffeine actually helps - depending on when you take the caffeine - relieve the headache and/or prevent a headache."

But he cautions that for some other people, caffeine can make the headache worse.
